Introduction

Nick Clarke welcomed everyone and outlined the background to the formation of the youth working group. A draft agenda was presented for discussion (attached).

Linton Experience

John Batchelor was invited to explain to the group how Linton had developed a successful youth project. The following significant points were noted:

Started in 1997

Establish facts – who wants what and why.

Youth drop in center provided and staffed by paid youth workers.

Required seed funding from Parish Council with out which it would have failed.

Additional funding from fundraising (£23k), Lottery community fund (initially £100k to fund staff for 3 years then further to fund until 2005).

Professional support provided by village college.

Paid youth workers employed. Now 65 hours a week.

Important to work with families, full time family worker now employed (35 hours).

Target most disaffected.

Start as young as possible to modify behaviour early.

Cost of youth workers £11 hour.

Discussion

A general discussion took place in which all members of the group participated. It was agreed that the Youth Working Group was a good idea and that it was starting out in the right direction. It was agreed that it was important that practical initiatives were important rather than just meetings. A set of actions were agreed.

Actions

The following actions were agreed:

Colin Thomas

1.                  Secure funding for 2 youth workers for needs assessment.

2.                  Seek long term funding (end of financial year) to develop youth work.

3.                  Arrange for a presentation of the findings of the needs assessment to the village. Provide a meal at end of assessment for those taking part.

Jonathan Abbs

4.                  Check with the village college as to the availability of the youth center. Information is required to understand which nights are available at what times. Jonathan to let Nick Clarke know the answer.

Hilda Buchanan

5.                  Check availability of BVC hall on the 14th Nov 2003 for needs assessment presentation. Ensure no other events planned for that date.

Ian Butcher

7.                  Investigate what funds are available from the Police to support the initiative.
